Founded in 2005, BeadWORKS now employs over 1,300 craftswomen in indigenous communities across northern Kenya, providing them with all the training, resources and support they need to create their beautiful beaded jewelry and handicrafts. Not only does this process help to preserve an age-old African art form, it also allows these female artisans to earn a reliable income for themselves and their families without having to resort to work that is environmentally damaging. Rather than a factory setting, these makers often work from their homes or in local, self-governed women’s groups, which both fosters a sense of community and allows BeadWORKS to operate in harmony with their employee’s traditional semi-nomadic lifestyles.
